Summer Reading

Dear ISA Readers,

Creating a school-wide culture of reading has always been a priority for the administration, teachers, and librarians at ISA. That culture is built and nurtured in a myriad of ways--through the study of literature elements, read-alouds, book talks, reading workshop, literature circles, genre studies, reading logs/journals, author visits, Book Week, mother tongue events, and summer reading. Wondering how to nurture your child's love of reading, find out some tips HERE

Summer is a perfect time to find books to read for pleasure. These lists serve as starting points to help you select books that match your interests and includes a variety of titles. Our goal is to develop readers who not only can read, but who choose to read for enjoyment.

Summer reading is a great opportunity to hone your reading skills and maintain your fluency. According to a recent report from John Hopkins University's Center for Summer Learning, children who do not read over the summer actually lose ground in reading proficiency . The report concludes that the effect of reading four or five books during the summer is large enough to prevent a decline in reading scores from spring to fall.

Summer is also a great time for students to read in their mother tongue language(s) . Research shows that EAL students learn English more quickly and effectively if they maintain and develop their proficiency in the mother tongue. Continuing to read or be read to in one's mother tongue is an important part of maintaining and developing this proficiency . The ISA libraries are happy to lend books from our international collections for summer reading and we encourage families to visit libraries and book stores that can also provide mother tongue materials .

In addition to the lissts, the ISA libraries offer a wealth of additional titles and suggestions to help you find just the right books for your enjoyment.  ISA libraries are happy to lend books to families that will return for the 2016-2017 school year.  If all overdue titles are returned on an account, parents may take up to 20 books and students may take up to 10.  We will be open for Summer Checkout on June gth- 161h.

Explore. Read. Enjoy,

The ISA Library Team
