Artificial Intelligence #IBGC2023: Policy Development

Drawing on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the guidance offers nine requirements for child-centered AI:

Support children’s development and well-being
Ensure inclusion of and for children
Prioritize fairness and non-discrimination for children
Protect children’s data and privacy
Ensure safety for children
Provide transparency, explainability, and accountability for children
Empower governments and businesses with knowledge of AI and children’s rights
Prepare children for present and future developments in AI
Create an enabling environment

From The American School in Japan, published in August 2023, a set of guidelines and guardrails for the use of artificial intelligence (AI), designed to "provide guidance for the integration of AI into education at ASIJ while emphasizing ethical use and academic integrity. This marks the first time the school has established a comprehensive school-wide document for AI use, covering all divisions from elementary to high school."

In cooperation with UNESCO's work on AI and Ethics, the International School of Geneva created their Generative AI Policy to address both the possibilities and pitfalls of GenAI for education.

An early voice in AI framework development, Stephen Taylor, Director of Innovation in Teaching and Learning, Western Academy of Beijing, asks the question "How might schools adapt to the rapidly-developing impacts of AI on teaching and learning?" His answer is his framework, a work in progress:

(If You) USEME-AI is a suggested outline for thinking about teaching and learning in our new AI-augmented reality. AI, like many other innovations, has the power to transform the learning experience if harnessed well.

(If You) USEME-AI might help frame conversations and interactions around the application of these tools in a school setting.

Having clarity over the acceptable and responsible use of AI is as important for students as it is for teachers, and can provide parents and the wider community with a sense of how AI is being brought into the school." How can educators craft artificial intelligence policies that support our mission to educate for international understanding and center ATLs? Here are examples that will provide schools with language and context about the creative benefits of Gen AI, while also providing guidance to avoid ethical pitfalls and address potential bias.

Alice Keeler writes, "Rightfully, there is concern that students will plug in assignment prompts into AI Chatbots such as ChatGPT and Google Bard in order to complete their assignments. As EdTech evolves, so do the tools that we use to facilitate teaching and learning. Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers a variety of benefits to the English Language Arts classroom, including improved personalization and support for learners. However, we need to ensure that these tools are used responsibly, maintaining academic integrity and the core purpose of English education. Here are some suggested elements to include in your acceptable use policy on your syllabus for your class."

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to address some of the biggest challenges in education today, innovate teaching and learning practices, and ultimately accelerate the progress towards SDG 4. However, these rapid technological developments inevitably bring multiple risks and challenges, which have so far outpaced policy debates and regulatory frameworks. This publication offers guidance for policy-makers on how best to leverage the opportunities and address the risks, presented by the growing connection between AI and education.
